what we learned
Hello my name is Anthony Orta and i work at MAP. Yesterday 1/11/11 me and my fellow youth employee Robert Moses went to a meeting lead by Louis Gibbs. This Fellowship meeting was in regard to teaching us about environmental injustice, for example the Love Canal incident that occurred in the 70's. The love canal is in the northern part of buffalo and there were many companies dumping a lot of toxic waste into a dump-site that eventually had a school built over it. The chemicals started leaking into the people who lived in love canals basements and the toxic air got into there heating systems. It got so bad that 66% of childbirth came out with birth defects. Louis Gibbs was telling us about ways she fought to secure the safety of the residents in Love Canal. We will be attending more of these meetings in the future so we can become more aware of environmental justice and how it's important in our community.
